Salix were contracted by Mansell Construction to dredge the contaminated goit forming Kelham Island and working closely with ecologists ECUS to create marginal habitat.

Kelham Island was flooded during the Sheffield flooding in the summer of 2007 when the River Don burst its banks and over topped the wall at Kelham weir.

Salix desilted the goit using tracked dumpers within the goit and transferring the silt into sealed road lorries for disposal at a specialist landfill site in Middlesbrough.

Wildlife margin was established along the museum side of the goit by using pre-established Coir Rolls to maintain soft banking in the now through-flowing goit.

Flow control was established by replacing the steel sluice gate leading from the River Don and replacing the double timber sluice gates at the goit outfall.
