Soil erosion by flowing water happens when the energy of flow can remove the surface soil particles. The weaker the soil and the greater the flow, the greater the erosion risk.

The risk is a factor of shear stress/water flow velocity, the character of the bank soil and the bank angle.

Establishing the risk allows the correct intervention which often eliminates over engineered hard revetments with bioengineering alternatives. This saves money and delivers maximum environmental value.
