River Stour Improvement Works, Kidderminster
Client: Carillion
Project Brief: Planning consent for a new Morrison superstore required improvement works to the River Stour. The brief was to clear existing Himalayan Balsam, provide greater biodiversity and reinstate marginal vegetation within a short time frame.
The Solution: Salix were appointed specialist sub contractors after advising the consultants at design stage. The over steepened river banks were graded back to a shallower angle and protected from erosion with NAG C350. Rock Rolls with fish refuges were installed at the toe to prevent scouring, with Pre-Established Coir Rolls and Pre-Established Pallets providing mature marginal vegetation. At the entrance to the site, Morrisons requested an instant green solution for the grand opening the following week. Salix Shear Stress Turf was installed over the regraded banks to provide the instant green effect.
The Result: Morrisons got their instant green solution at the main entrance. Within weeks, grass was establishing through the NAG C350 providing a long term reinforced protective surface. Despite heavy rain throughout the works, the Rock Rolls prevented any toe erosion and the Coir Rolls and Coir Pallets helped to trap fine sediment, which will aid marginal plant establishment.
